A Clueless Murder

Our Classic Whodunnit

Guest Info

Scarlet Red – Samuel’s Ex-wife. As fiery and feisty as her name suggests, Samuel Sapphire’s man-izing ex-wife and business partner has had her flings over the years, but can anyone ever really replace her first true love?

Mrs. Sapphire – Samuel’s Widow. As Samuel’s current wife and mother of his three children, Mrs. Saapphire has proven more than once you can’t cage a free bird.

Lady Lavender – Samuel’s Eldest Daughter. Lady Lavender was daddy’s little girl, but as she got older, the “Lady” didn’t always do as daddy would have liked.

Ivanna Ivory –Samuel’s Daughter. The oldest of the twins, Ivanna tried to gain daddy’s attention and affection by marrying the perfect male heir – Igor Ivory!

Igor Ivory – Samuel’s Son-In-Law. Upon marriage, Igor was accepted into the family business and he has been moving up the ranks quickly ever since. Could he have wanted more from Samuel than the union to his daughter?

Tanya Teal – Samuel’s Daughter. The youngest of Samuel’s twin daughters, tenacious older teen has been stirring up family trouble since birth.

Madame Mauve – Samuel’s Sister. Madame Mauve has been living off of Samuel’s wealth for years. Can the Madame afford her lifestyle now that Samuel is gone? Or will it only improve…

Pierre Pink – Samuel’s Nephew. Pierre Pink is expecting to inherent millions–is he as misguided as the color he was named after?

Dr. Iris – Family Psychologist. The secrets Dr. Orchid knows are on the most personal and intimate level… feelings that some may kill for!

Mr. Midnight– Butler. As Samuel’s devoted personal servant for over twenty years, there is little that Mr. Midnight does not know about Samuel, or his dying wishes.

Antoinette – Maid. Her service over the years is something that she feels MUST be rewarded.

Monsieur Slate – Chauffeur. Born and raised at Mystery Manor, Monsieur Slate’s parents were the maid and butler for the Boddy family. Moody and unassuming, Monsieur Gray isn’t expecting much from Mr. Boddy, for that is what he felt he got through all the years.

Chef Tangerine – Cook. With hints of fruitiness, this chef knows not only what is brewing in the kitchen, but also the rest of the manor.

Don Burgundy – Pool Boy. A more recent employee acquired by Mrs. Sapphire (Samuel’s wife). Don was hired to keep the pool, amongst others, in tip-top shape.

Professor Periwinkle – Samuel’s Lawyer. This dignified and subdued counselor was kept busy with all of Samuel’s legal issues, including revisions to his will, even on his dying day.

Colonel Copper – Samuel’s Closest Friend. Appearing out of nowhere, Samuel’s long lost friend has come to honor his confidant’s memory, while others question the colonel’s hidden agenda.

Officer Indigo – Detective. Officer Indigo has some hot leads on who the murderer may be… and they all lead to this gathering.

Miss Apricot – Samuel’s Personal Assistant. Miss Peach works hard to be as innocent as her name suggests, but the real question is, how personal was their relationship?

Reverend Emerald– Samuel’s Accountant. A retired person of the cloth, this minister found their true calling in the fields of green – money, that it. Could how the reverend handled the books over the years determine the wealth that is left?

Sandy Silver – Art Buyer. Samuel’s go-to associate with knowledge of the art world, this confidant has just as much flare as their name suggests. However, did Samuel depend on Arty for more than their artistic advice?

Setting the Scene

Create An Entrance

Create an Entrance

  • Entryway Red Carpet: Just like in the grand mansions and manors, lay a red carpet leading to your front door. This gives your guests a VIP and old Hollywood feel as they enter.

  • Velvet Rope: Alongside the red carpet, set up a velvet rope or stanchions.
  • Candle-lit Path: Use LED candles (for safety) in vintage-looking lanterns or candelabras to light the path to the entrance.
  • Footprints: Use temporary chalk or decals to create footprints leading to the door, hinting at the mystery inside.

  • Weather Effects: Use a fog machine to create a misty, eerie atmosphere outside. For added effect, play the sound of distant thunder or rain lightly in the background.
  • Mansion Façade: Use large cardboard or poster boards to create silhouettes of mansion windows, towers, or other architectural features. Illuminate these from behind with yellow or orange lights to give the illusion of a grand mansion.

  • Butler Greeting: Consider having Mr. Midnight (your butler) arrive early so they can greet the guests at the door. This will really set the mood and get everyone into character.
Or, you can have Mr. Midnight mingling with the guests after they enter. Have Mr. Midnight holding a silver tray with envelopes for each guest’s name tag, money and “A” objectives.
  • Crime Scene Tape: While it’s a bit on the nose, a bit of “crime scene” tape can remind guests that a murder has occurred.

  • Character Silhouettes: Place cardboard silhouettes of the Clue characters in windows or around the entrance. For added drama, backlight them.
  • Mansion Nameplate: Create an old-fashioned nameplate or sign for your home that reads “Mystery Manor.” Design included with mystery purchase.

  • Create a graveyard. Outdoors, create a family graveyard (instructions on how to make your own authentic tombstones in the packet.)
    • Don’t forget to put the tomb of Samuel Sapphire – Add another tombstone with your party’s date and no name or a “?” on it.

Inside Your Party Space

Inside Your Party Space

  • Have a table to memorialize Samuel Sapphire. Include pictures of the late millionaire.

  • Hang art (fictitious or real) around the venue to simulate Samuel Sapphire’s art gallery.
    • Create small placards with the frames so that it looks like authentic artwork in a gallery or museum.
    • Find inexpensive picture frames and spray paint them gold.
    • Print pictures or famous artwork from the internet to place into your frames.
  • Hang signs for each of the rooms – Library, Conservatory, Kitchen, etc. Signs included with mystery purchase. Find pictures of this.

  • Glam up the inside with a can of gold spray paint.
    • Paint wine bottles, candlesticks, old vases (and add flowers – fake or real), etc.
  • Vintage Furnishings: Incorporate vintage-style furniture or covers to make your space resemble an old mansion. Think velvet drapes, Persian rugs, and wooden accents.
  • Have a vase of dead flowers as a centerpiece to add to the eerie atmosphere.
    • You can sometimes get old or dead flowers from a florist for no charge.
  • For live floral arrangements: Opt for deep, dark florals like deep red roses, purple orchids, or black dahlias. This gives an air of elegance while maintaining the mysterious mood.
  • Label the rooms. Use signs (included with the mystery) to commemorate the rooms. Included are 3 designs, which you can name yourself. Some examples include:
    • Ballroom
    • Study
    • Library
    • Kitchen
    • Etc.

    • Look for pictures of this to compliment.

  • Hang the “family tree” – included with the mystery.
    • See if you can find other pictures OR, see if you can get AI to generate a picture with this image as a poster in a moody-filled party room.

  • Have an assortment of weapons set out, either as a decoration or as props for fun.

  • Use Clue™ board games and scene setter to decorate and “set the mood”.

  • Create a “scene of the crime” with a taped outline, fake evidence and a bloodstain – all roped off with caution or crime scene tape.

Lighting - Setting the Mood

Lighting – Setting the Mood

TO CREATE AN ERIE LIGHTING, CONSIDER USING NON-TRADITIONAL LIGHTING.

Use dim lighting to set the mood:

  • Tea lights — To add a shimmering effect, place them on mirrored circles (found at your local craft shop) or simply cover cardboard with aluminum foil and place the tea lights on top of them.
  • Led Candles that shimmer
  • White twinkly lights
  • White paper lanterns
  • Chandeliers
  • Candelabras

Consider colored light bulbs in rooms for a dramatic effect

  • a soft green hue in the Billiard Room
  • a warm amber in the Library
  • A cozy blue light in the Conservatory
  • A purple glow in the Study

Black Lit Atmosphere – One host took it over-the-top and black lit their party. Check out the cool lighting and decorations!

Create a Photo Spot!

Create a Photo Spot!

Give your guests an unforgettable souvenir by setting up a photo area where they can capture a picture of themselves in character.

  A few suggestions:

  • Pick a place where there will be good lighting.
  • You can make it as elaborate or simple as you want.
  • Accessories and decorations can make the difference. Have some extra props on hand that your guests can pose with. Consider extra wigs, top hats, bowler hats, mustaches, sherlock hats, magnifying classes, feather boas, etc.
    – There is a suspect board included with mystery purchase to use as a prop!
  • An easy way to create a background is to use a “scene setter.” These affordable rolls of images transform your room instantly and make for a good backdrop to your picture.

– Suggested backdrops:
• Library background
• Clue game board backdrop
• Police line-up backdrop

  • Make sure there is enough room to fit everyone into the frame.
  • For individual shots of guests, designate someone to be in charge of pictures as your guests arrive.

o Consider your character list and which character would fit the role of taking the picture. Ie, if you want mugshots, perhaps ask the investigator to be in charge of taking the pictures.

  • For a group picture, take one just before the introduction is read or right after the solution is read (before people may start heading out).

o These are two times when you can count on everyone being around and attentive.

BACKDROP IDEAS for your A Clueless Murder photo spot

  • Create a line-up board and take pictures of all of your suspects. Line-up board included with mystery materials.
  • Use scene setters to make a simple background.
  • Use props to enhance the photos. Have things like top hats, boas, big sunglasses, etc. for your guests to pose with.
  • Paint your own backdrop to pose in front of!

Tips

All of the information regarding how to run your Clueless Murder adult murder mystery game can be found online at Night of Mystery. We highly suggest that you take time to look over our website and download the A Clueless Murder preview file. Upon reading the introduction file, it will give you a better understanding about how the parties are run and what to expect once you purchase a full mystery file.

If you still have question, the Frequently Asked Questions page at Night of Mystery is a great resource or you can contact us.
Since our games are custom written for the size of the party (ie, we don’t just create a mystery with 8 characters and then keep adding more characters to it), each mystery size is unique unto itself. That being said, going from 10-15 version to 15-20 version, will not only add in more characters, but it will change the storylines of the existing characters, and vice-versa in going from a larger version to a smaller one.

Because of this, WE STRONGLY SUGGEST you get a guest count before formally ordering. You can do so by downloading an invitation, inviting your guests and then purchasing your mystery once you have a more accurate number of people attending. Unfortunately, if you find yourself purchasing the wrong sized party, you will have to purchase another version of the mystery for the size you want unless you are moving from the 15-20 version to the 20+ version.
You can download an invitation here before ordering.
For even more party planning ideas, check out our A Clueless Murder Pinterest Board here.

Once you order, in your mystery packet you will receive directions and/or printables to make unique and original decorations specific to your party! Included will be:

• EVIDENCE MARKERS
• HOW TO MAKE A TOMBSTONE
• SIGNS
• NAME CARDS
• FOOD CARDS
• DESIGNED DINNER MENUS (you can personalize with your menu items)
• WINE BOTTLE LABELS (to use as awards!)
AND MORE!!!
